Having pushed the bleeding-edge of delicious spirits and liqueurs for more than a decade, English Spirit founder and Master Distiller John Walters' passion for all things glass and plate are brought together in our adventure at Treguddick, a small hamlet where all things spirits and food combine to titillate the pallet to extraordinary heights.
How did it come to pass? For many the bacon sandwich is a wondrous thing. When made with superb bread and outstanding green back bacon from Master Butcher Philip Warren sourced from a few miles away, it transcends into something on the edge of emotional. When confronted with the sheer beauty of this very same sandwich served at our distillery in Treguddick, we were compelled to come up with the crème de la crème of ketchup - our boozy ketchup. Yes, simple need drove us to it.
The hamlet of Treguddick goes back to the 11th Century or more and Treguddick Manor’s original long-house room can be dated to at least 1290 or before. Nestled in the grounds of the historic Treguddick Manor, near Launceston, Cornwall. A world-first experience; combining our unique methods of distilling and our award-winning range of spirits, preserves and shrubs.
Our Treguddick restaurant and distillery is our bibulous culinary temple and our first product from here is our Boozy Ketchup! Yes, superb tasty ketchup augmented to super-condiment status with our English Spiced Rum! Sounds crazy? Read on…. We can assure you it is a delicious game-changer you will demand to keep well stocked up on!
We combined gorgeous tomatoes, soft brown sugar, our lovely vinegar made from our British rum and…(drum roll) our English Spiced Rum. Wham bam thank you mam, to quote David Bowie.
First we served it in little white bowls and then our customers simply kept saying and saying and saying some more… "When I can I buy that to take home and scoff there???"
And so Boozy Ketchup was born out of pure need.

DOING THE IMPOSSIBLE
Having received a Doctorate in Biochemistry from Oxford University, John’s career ranged from pharmaceutical development to alcoholic beverage consultancy. Eventually he combined his biochemistry knowledge with his passion for fine food & drinks, and turned his hand to distilling. From his first still run over ten years ago, John realised there was a gap in the market for genuinely high quality spirits, and set out to bring the methodology of distilling firmly into the 21st century.
Since that first experiment, he is one of the UK’s most experienced distillers. Turning an average of ten stills a day, and distilling the UK’s widest variety of spirits from scratch. His creations have won the most prestigious awards from the leading international spirit competitions, and he has consistently led innovation in the spirits market. He was first in the UK to distil rum, sambuca and baijiu; he has worked with some of the world’s finest ingredients; and has developed world leading techniques for extracting flavours and accelerating ageing processes. In other words, he has truly earned the title of Master Distiller.
